BYU vs Texas

Finally...the day we had been waiting for.  The first home game of the BYU Football season!  We would be facing off against the Texas Longhorns, and we were pumped!  Danny and I had purchased two season tickets for our family, which meant that Danny would take one kid (or me) to the games.  We decided that Danny should take Johnny for the first game.  We figured the weather would be warm with it being a September game, and kickoff was in the afternoon, so it wouldn't be too late of a game.  Johnny couldn't have been more excited!

To start the day off right, we decided to have a special Game Day lunch.  Danny made his delicious Chilean Beans and grilled trout to go with it!  There is nothing quite as attractive as a man in the kitchen... :)

Grandma and Papa came over to enjoy lunch with us.  And enjoy it we did!  It was amazing!

Then, appropriately clad in their game day shirts, Papa, Danny, Aunt Katie, and Johnny left for the stadium.  The girls and I cleaned up the house and got ready to watch the game at home.

As Danny and the crew got to Provo, parked the car, and started toward the stadium, Danny realized our best intentions of good weather for Johnny's first game may not be realized after all.  There was a wicked storm brewing...

It was at that point that Danny realized that he forgot the tickets in the car.  He left Johnny in Papa's care and ran back to the car.  He was just starting to make his way back when the storm hit.  And it hit with so much force that Danny couldn't see in front of him for the wind and rain.  Trash cans were flying, and it was intense!  Papa did his best to shelter Johnny from the storm's wrath, but it was hard since they were out in the open, too.  Everyone got soaked!  We had awesome ponchos with us, but no one had time to get them on before the storm hit.  It was so bad that the game was delayed by two hours due to lightening.  I watched the footage of the storm rolling into the stadium on TV, and it was unbelievable.  The rain was so bad that you couldn't see the stand opposite the press box, and the wind was so intense that it blew the cameras on top of the press box off.  A friend of ours is a dispatcher, and was working the game that day.  She said the stands were literally swaying.  It was an incredible storm!  And it scarred Johnny for life.  For weeks afterwards, whenever he saw a cloud in the sky or felt the slightest breeze, he would cower in my arms.  Poor guy!

Danny finally made his way back to the group, and Johnny was happier to be with him...though I can't say he was exactly happy.  Danny took Johnny's wet jacket off, and put him in a poncho so at least he was dry.

And that helped a lot!  Once he was warmed up, Johnny was much happier.  Everyone found a place out of the rain and waited for the game to start.

It took a while!  Johnny was able to get a pre-game nap, which was helpful since the game ended up going a lot later than we had planned.

But finally the clouds parted and the Cougars took the field!  We played exceptionally well, and delivered the Longhorns one of the most embarrassing losses in their school's history.  It was a crazy Game Day for sure, but it was worth every bit of trauma. :)

After all, we are NOT fair weather fans!
