July iMoments

Just a typical Saturday afternoon. I love how Joey thinks he's playing too. :)

Sophie had treats for FHE, so she researched a recipe and made them almost entirely on her own! Strawberry shortcake cupcakes. They were delicious!

My little yogi...he totally rocks "downward dog". :)

Our good friends the Ellsworth are, well, braver than us! They took in two Chinese foreign exchange students for a few weeks in July. Their family loved the experience! The Chinese boys really wanted to swim, so we invited them over to the school for a BBQ and had a great time. They ate so much food!! And the older boy, "Wilson", really loved Joey. It was a great experience for our kids to interact with other children from another country and culture.

Joey is so into weapons. In fact, everything is a weapon! With the sound effects to go with it. He's such a boy! The light saber is his favorite right now, and he goes around hitting everyone with it all day long. He's such a crack up!

Joey and his joey. :)

I made a passing comment to Grandma Call about how cute it would be to have a section of the garden for every grandkid. Well, she took me literally! Now we have "Claire's Cantaloupe"...

...and "Sophie's Sunflowers"...

...and "John's Beanstalk" (because he helped to plant them)...

...and of course "Poseph's Pumpkins"!

We are so spoiled having our own private pool. It really is the best. We had so much fun having Isabelle, Eli, and Ava over to swim.

And getting 50 cent ice cream cones at McDonald's afterwards was summertime perfection.

Danny found a scholarship at work for the girls to attend a STEM Camp (science, technology, engineering, and math). They had a wonderful time! They made slime and bouncy balls, made a computer circuit, and even played with a robot named Dash. They can't wait to do it again!

There really are benefits to Facebook. :) When Danny saw that his cousin's husband was coming to do an organ recital at Temple Square, he cleared his Sunday afternoon and we took the family. It was incredible! David is an organ professor at Kansas State. He first showed the audience the unique acoustic properties of the Tabernacle, and then he performed a number of organ pieces that showed the variety and breadth of what the Tabernacle organ can do. It was phenomenal, and we are so glad we went!

Joey is a child unlike any of our others! The older he gets the more destructive, inquisitive, cute, and naughty he gets! And we love him for it. :)

Johnny had the treat for FHE, and since Pioneer Day was only a week away he searched through the friend for an appropriately themed treat. His covered wagons were so much fun to make and eat!

Coleman Orthodontics Patient Appreciation Party! When we saw how many people were there, we got to thinking that maybe Danny missed his calling and should have become an orthodontist! ;)

Once upon a time, we lived in Orem and just had one (or two) cute little girls. We had these good friends, the Hulberts. We introduced the Hulberts to the greatest sci-fi show of all time...Stargate SG-1! Now, all these years later, the students have become the masters. We were invited to the 25th anniversary party for the first time the team walked through the gate...and it was awesome! I made Jaffa Cupcakes, complete with the Apophis symbol. We had a wonderful time with old friends and new friends!

If it wasn't crazy enough to end up meeting and becoming friends with the family that built our house, it turns out we're family!! The Damianos stopped by to see the house on their way through town, and in the course of conversation we discovered that Danny and Jared are cousins through Danny's Lovell line. The crazy connections never seem to stop! The Damianos are about the coolest people you could ever meet.

Our weekly shopping trip was better with a 50 cent ICEE from Sam's Club. There was no way I was going to give Joey his own, but Sophie was a sweet sister and was happy to share. :)

It was very, very belated...but we finally got Claire out for her birthday lunch! Per our tradition, we tried somewhere new and ordered some fun food. Claire had to have her calamari...this time paired with fried artichokes. Definitely among the best calamari Danny and I have had.

Claire is such a little foodie-in-embryo, and we had so much fun sharing lunch with her! Can't believe she's already ten years old!

Danny had a business trip to St. Louis this month. As much has we miss him when he's gone, it was a cool trip for him. He got to stay in the same hotel that we stayed in as a family on our way to Georgia, and he had time to do a session in the St. Louis Temple. It's a beautiful temple!

The harvest is beginning in earnest! Danny taught the kids how to prepare a brine for cucumbers like his grandparents used to do. They weren't so much a fan of the sweet-vinegary cucumbers slices, but Danny and I sure were! They'll grow into it, I'm sure. They're Calls after all!

I hate car-carts. But the kids insisted we let Joey try it out. It was worth the photo-op if nothing else. :)

So Danny called me to be one a Gospel Doctrine teacher. This year's curriculum is the Doctrine and Covenants...which is intimidating in it's own right. But next year is Old Testament!!

Fresh corn on the cob is always Johnny's favorite part of the harvest. :)

We love our Sunday visits with Great Grandma Call. Danny has often told us of his memories of going over every Sunday evening, and his grandparents would have ice cream cones for the kids. We also know how much Great Grandma loves black licorice...and we've been dying to try Red Button's black licorice ice cream! So we decided to bring the ice cream cones to Great Grandma's this time, and she LOVED the black licorice! We're so blessed and so grateful to have this wonderful woman in our life.

Joey absolutely loves books. And we absolutely love indoctrinating our children from a very young age. ;)

Black licorice and cotton candy ice cream. Joey approved!

Ogden Overlook Trail 2.0

We love hiking. We look for free weekends and Danny excitedly looks for a new trail. This particular Friday night Danny decided we should hike the Ogden Overlook Trail again, and at first I was a little disappointed. I've gotten to really like conquering new trails. I can't remember Danny's reasoning now, but obviously it was sound since I went along with it. :)

We packed our dinner and filled our Camelbaks. At first, Danny didn't want to bother with packing in water for Maese (since there weren't any streams on this hike), but when we put Maese in his crate he full on freaked out! He knew we were hiking and he didn't want to miss it. Seriously, he's never in his life acted like that! Danny couldn't leave him home after that, so we packed his backpack and everyone piled in the car. See? The WHOLE family loves hiking! :)

We originally did this trail back in June of 2015, and we took my niece Megan and her friend Alyssa along for the journey. It was fun to remember how little our kids were the last time we were there, and how much better they are at hiking now! The weather was gorgeous, the temperature was much cooler, and the scenery was so beautiful.

Joey loved his time on the summit...running around and scaring us all with the ledge that dropped off into the valley just feet away at any given moment. He especially loved making mud from the water in Maese's drinking dish. Danny and I figured that he earned some naughty time by being so incredibly good in his pack. :)

 f

The kids remembered Megan and Alyssa making the victory bridge on our first hike, and they insisted that Danny and I do it this time. :) We were just happy that Johnny walked through without the coaxing required last time. ;)

We managed the 5.48 miles and 950 vertical feet in 3 hours. Everyone did great and we had a wonderful time. And I loved hiking with my new AppleWatch and seeing how many calories I burn doing these hikes! Makes me love it even more. :) I can't wait to see what trail we do next!

Vigil Cousin Camp

A few months ago I had the thought that my girls would love to plan and execute a "Cousin Camp". Knowing Jami and her kids would be here in July, we decided to do it then. The girls pinned activity ideas for weeks and were so excited! We started things out at Grandma Candy's house the night before with a giant sleepover! I don't know how much sleeping was had...but a good time was definitely had by all. (Especially by Rose, Tali, and Ace who stayed at my house and escaped the crazy.) ;)

Admittedly, while the kids were pinning ideas for weeks, Jami and I hadn't really had the chance to plan much past the 4th of July. We did our planning the evening beforehand while we ate dinner. But it turned out better that way! Because we were tired and knew we didn't have much time to get ready for this Cousin Camp we kept things simple. When left with too much time, we can make things a little more complicated than they need to be. :)

Jami brought all the kids to my house a little before lunchtime. Rose started painting faces while Jami   helped the kids make some kind of fluffy, stretchy play-doh stuff. This was Jami's favorite activity...and it made my whole house smell like mango hair conditioner...which I was a fan of!

While the girls were busy with interactive activites, I don't think the boys even said hello before they were downstairs on the Xbox creating a whole new Minecraft world. But hey, they were happy Cousin Campers! Who were we to argue? :)

It didn't take long for the kids to get hungry, and the adults to need a break too. So we enjoyed some Little Caesar's Pizza and a few episodes of "Phineaus and Ferb" in the nice cool, dark basement. It was the perfect intermission to all the fun.

With the preliminaries out of the way, it was time to start the fun in earnest. Ace and I had filled up two wading pools and the slip n' slide in the backyard, and while the secondary water was obviously cloudy we just pretended we were spending the day at the lake (yuck)! :) Jami had picked up dollar store water guns for everyone, and the kids had a blast. Rose had painted as many faces as wanted painting, and once again blew us all way with her incredible skills. The kids just found whatever picture on Pinterest and Rose replicated it perfectly! Amazing...

Now, the fluffy play-doh was Jami's favorite...but I knew that tie-dying shirts was going to be my favorite! Someday I want to really legit Cousin Camp shirts. But this year the kids were going to be tie-dying large sleeping shirts. :) We had a blast. Everyone did their own shirt, with Tali and Lily (being the tie-dying experts) helped the kids to twist and band their shirts in different ways. We even did a onesie for Joey!

As we got into the evening the rest of the adult members of the clan gathered at our house for dinner. These cute kids had worked up quite the appetite and enjoyed their smothered burritos and Jami's caterpillar skewers. We ended the night with ice cream cones, some rounds of Kubb, and an evening walk for the moms. It was a perfect day, and the greatest cousin camp ever! Just wish the rest of the cousins could have been there too.

We had another afternoon of playing the next day, but the day after that it was time to say goodbye to our dearest Downs. The kids and I went up to Grandma Candy's first thing in the morning so we could bid them a proper goodbye. It's very likely that it'll be a year before we see the younger kids again. We'll be seeing Jeff, Jami, Rose, and Tali when we go to Rexburg for Megan's graduation but that was cold comfort to my kids who were going to miss their cousins like crazy. It was such a fun week together. We had played ourselves straight to exhaustion, but if we'd had a choice we'd have just kept on going. It's such a blessing to have family you love so much. :)

We're all looking forward to the time we can have ALL the cousins together for another Cousin Camp!
